Our story
More than a century of roasting coffee
Café Royal was founded in 1918, when Gregorio Rodríguez Villarreal, from Vallecillo, Nuevo León, opened a family coffee roasting and trading business in Monterrey. The name comes from the English-made Royal roaster the business started with. The family sold its coffee through Monterrey’s neighborhood grocery stores and later supermarkets, where beans were ground in front of customers. After a temporary closure in 1980, the founder’s grandson, Luis Óscar Rodríguez Villarreal, reopened the company in the 1990s with a focus on institutional clients, and around 2000 it secured the exclusive Mexican trademark “Café Royal Monterrey”. Today the fourth generation, Venecia Rodríguez and David Arturo Rodríguez Ayala, runs the company. Café Royal roasts coffee from Chiapas, Oaxaca and Veracruz; it sells whole bean and ground coffee online with shipping across Mexico, supplies cafés, restaurants, hotels and offices wholesale, and runs a warehouse store in Monterrey’s Colonia Hidalgo that serves coffee drinks made with house recipes.
